use cmd command, go to start and type cmd in search fild, go to exact folder where is your zip file saved, and rename to ipsw file, for example:

c:\user\laptop>cd desktop
c:\user\laptop\desktop>ren iPhone3, iPhone3,1_6.1.3.ipsw
and after you will have good ipsw file, everything what you need is to change extension of zip file, and for me this is the best way 😉

my iphone is not restoring nd giving error on restoring firmware plz give me a solution……..plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Oh wonderful! Works like a charm.

A few tips for those with problems:
If you use safari the setting “open safe files after download” can mess things up. The downloaded file IS the ipsw file and it should not be opened or decompressed.

To use the file, go into iTunes and click restore with the alt-button pressed, there you can choose firmware to restore onto the device. Choose your new .ipsw-file.

If you for some reason open the ipsw-package you will find password protected .dmg-files. This is expected – They are encrypted by apple and is to prevent tampering with the firmware.

Don’t expect that you can restore a backup from newer iOS to older. In some cases it might work, not in all cases.

If you wonder which code (iPhone3,1 etc) your phone has, check the application mactracker, its great.
Good luck.
